How are migrants treated in detention centers? Terribly. A damning report from The Atlantic revealed that ICE border camps, akin to concentration camps and prisons, are incredibly overcrowded with over 150 migrants packed into room meant for under 50. Worse yet, border camps in Texas lacked running water, medicine, or even food for migrants. As a result, 24 migrants passed away in ICE custody during Trump's presidency as of June 2019. Until faced with public pressure, our government, particularly this administration will not make change. Thus, it is up to us to force the change we want to see in the immigration system. Detained migrants often don't have the resources or connections needed to access private lawyers, making Pro Bono representation their only access to legal aid. A staggeringly low 14% of detained migrants are represented by attorneys in court, according to the National Immigrant Justice Center. Put simply, there is a massive shortfall of lawyers for migrants that Pro Bono representation can help fill. Without legal representation, migrants are usually detained for long periods of time and ultimately deported. Here are some resources to obtain representation in the court!
